9 Simple hairstyles for school dances

It’s almost time to dance the night away! Whether it’s Prom or Spring Formal, you should feel great for your big night. No matter what your individual style is, there’s a ‘do for you that you can achieve at home. So, after you get a fresh haircut from your local Great Clips salon, dance the night away in one of these 9 trendy hairstyles!

Hairstyles for him

Side Part

Make a statement on the dance floor with this slick style! This simple side-part is timeless and perfect for guys with some length to work with. With damp hair, use a comb to create the part, then add a small amount of pomade or styling cream to hold your hair in place. As your hair dries, watch for pieces of hair that try to migrate back. If you can catch them in the act, slick them down with a little bit of extra cream like Solutions by Great Clips Glossing Multi-Task Cream.

Man Bun

For our long-haired fellas, try pulling it back into a styled bun. While your hair is damp, work in a shine-boosting styling product such as Solutions Tea Tree Coconut Oil Texture. Then, wrap your hair through an elastic once or twice, leaving it halfway through the hair tie as your finished product. Minimal effort for an eye-catching style!

Slicked-back

You can’t get much more classic than the slick-back. Similar to other styles, it’s best to start working with your hair while it’s damp. Work in a shine-enhancing pomade like the American Crew Pomade, grab a comb and start to work your hair back. If you need some additional hold, a spritz of hairspray such as the American Crew Medium-Hold Spray Gel or a small dollop of gel does the trick!

Pompadour

This look may take some practice, but the payoff is worth it for this classy style. First, apply a pomade or styling wax like TIGI Bed Head Matte Separation Workable Wax into damp hair. Starting at the front, blow dry your hair while combing your hair up and back. When your hair is almost dry, use a brush to hold the hair upwards in the front and finish blow drying it in this position. Doing this will help it maintain volume. After following this process, you have a completed pompadour! Add a little bit of hairspray, especially in the front, to make sure the style holds through your night of fun!

Hairstyles for her

Half Up Half Down

Feeling torn between wearing your hair up or down? Why not both? This style is not only one of the fastest and easiest looks on our list, but it also works with various hair types! First, brush your hair out and divide it horizontally into two sections. To do this, pull the upper section of your hair back towards the crown of your head. Once you secure it with a hair tie, you’re ready to go to the dance! Spice up this look by using a ribbon or bedazzled clip or add volume with a styling tool like Solutions by Great Clips Volumizing Foam.

Tight Curls

All you need is a curling iron and some hairspray to achieve this simple look. Divide your hair into small sections – the smaller the sections, the tighter the curls. Then, twist each section around your curling iron for about three seconds. Repeat this process for the remaining sections of your hair and you’ll have beautiful, bouncy curls in no time! Using a holding product like Solutions by Great Clips Buildable Hairspray will help your look last through your wildest dance moves!

Ballet Bun

If you’re looking for something classic, you can’t go wrong with the tight ballet bun! Pull your hair back into a ponytail at your crown, using a comb to remove the bumps for a sleek look. After securing with an elastic, twist the ponytail to make the bun more secure, then tightly wind your ponytail around the elastic. When you’ve reached the end, secure it with bobby pins and hairspray – you can never go wrong with too much control! Check out our full list of products to find one perfect for you.

Messy Bun

Going for something a little more casual? The messy bun is calling your name! Pull your hair into a loose ponytail and secure it at the base of your neck. Take your ponytail and loosely twist it into a bun, looping the ends through the elastic. Loosen the front of your hair by pulling out sections to create texture. You can even loosen some small sections near your temples to frame your face. Check out our hair accessories blog for ideas on what to pair with this style!

Stylish Waves

If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, try out this look! Use a texturizing cream such as Solutions by Great Clips Texturizing Pomade and lightly work into damp hair. Then, lightly scrunch your hair as it air dries. Once your hair is completely dry, run your flat iron over two-inch sections from the top of your head to the top of your ear so the top lays flat and the bottom cascades into natural waves. Pin back one side of your hair with a sparkly clip to complement your dancewear.
